We are counting down the days left to fundraise for Gigantic Sequins 3.2, which is chock full of some pretty talented writers and artists. We will be bringing you NUMBER-RELATED QUESTIONS via our facebook and twitter pages to raise awareness of the days remaining in our Friend Drive. We’ll also post them here, in case you don’t have a facebook/twitter, but still want to respond! We’ll be updating this post daily until the final day of our fund drive, MAY 15th.

Announcement: Our 3.2 Contributors!

Hello everyone! We’ve begun the design process of our 3.2 issue, due out later this spring/early this summer. We’re very excited to announce our 3.2 contributors in art, comics, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry here today. In addition, we have a book review from someone not on our editorial staff in this issue. Also, we have to mention that we’re in need of more Friends of Gigantic Sequins, as once our issue is designed, we would like to go straight to print. If you yourself can’t donate, please help us spread the word about this friend drive after you take a look below at the great writers and artists we’ll be featuring in our next issue!

GS Events in Houston & NYC this weekend.

This weekend, we are participating in no less than THREE events! Our EIC & others will be helping celebrate Adam Moorad’s chapbook release at a party in Brooklyn on Friday the 13th, tomorrow. Then, Saturday, our poetry editor is representing us at the Houston Indie Book Fair. And finally, Sunday is the Brooklyn Zine Fest, where our EIC will be tabling for us.

If you live in NYC or Houston, we hope that you get a chance to stop by one of these events. Below is more information on each:

Adam Moorad Oak Ridge Chapbook Release :: Brooklyn, NYC

Friday, April 13th 2012 | 6:30pm-11pm | 442 humboldt st, #1B, Bklyn | FREE

Adam Moorad, GS 2.1 contributor, will be having a reading to celebrate his chapbook release with Turtleneck Press. There will be readings by Adam and others, cupcakes, and alcohol. Houston Indie Book Fest :: Menil Lawn, Houston, TX

Saturday, April 14th 2012 | 11am-5pm | 1515 Sul Ross St. Houston, TX | FREE

Gigantic Sequins will be tabling at this event. AWP Recap

Hello all! We had such a blast at AWP in Chicago that we don’t have too much to say about it besides that. We enjoyed meeting contributors whose faces we never put names to before, talking to any new friends and fans, throwing sequins at and around our table/friends from Big Lucks/passerby, and finally, we enjoyed all of the readings/panels we attended, on-site and on-site. Check out videos from our only off-site reading, BEFORE WE GO, below. There were readers from Knee-Jerk, Rose Metal Press, Big Lucks and Magic Helicopter Press as well, who were great.

These are from Saturday 3/3 at Beauty Bar. Our EIC, Kimberly Ann Southwick, took the footage on her phone, so the video quality is at times shaky, but most importantly, you can hear our poets loud and clear. Enjoy!

Select Poems Archived Online for your Perusal

We are pleased to announce that we have a select number of poems up on our Archives page. We still are adamant about being a print magazine, but we want to offer people who do not have easy access to a copy of our magazine a chance to see a few examples of what we like to publish. We hope that by doing this we will encourage writers to submit their work to us. In addition, we hope that readers who like what they say will consider purchasing a copy of our journal by buying one from our online store or from a bookstore, or by attending one of our events. So far we only have up poetry, but we should have, again, a select number of works in other genres.

Please visit the archives page to read a poem by Natasha Kessler and two by Joseph Calavenna. You also can peruse two poems from our 2.1 issue, one by Elizabeth Hoover and the other by Anne Marie Rooney.

We are excited to have a busy month ahead of us! Consolidated details for each event listed below can be found on our events page.

Join us in Boston next Thursday 2.25 for a 3.1 Celebration featuring Meg Cameron, Olivia Kate Cerrone, LaTanya McQueen, and Kelli Trapnell. We are pleased to be able to share these wonderful writers with you on this evening when we celebrate the fact that our 5th issue, 3.1, was printed earlier this year. Come out to support us and also the great independent bookstore & cafe that is hosting us, Trident Booksellers & Cafe. The flyer below has all of the information, as does the facebook invite.

If you can’t make it on Thursday, we’ll be sharing the stage with four other great literary endeavors: Redivider (the wonderful Emerson MFA student journal) Black Ocean, Boston Review, and Madras Press. Each group will have one reader representing them, and we’re excited to have Theadora Siranian reading for us. Our Editor in Chief will be displaying our wares for sale at this event, and we are thrilled to be a part of the Dirty Water Reading series, a resurrected Boston literary adventure. The event will be held at Lorem Ipsum books in Inman Square, which is located in Cambridge. Last but not least, we are gearing up for AWP 2012! We will be at table O10 with our friends at Big Lucks. We’ll have free stickers and copies of our beautiful-yet-affordable literary arts journal for sale. We will also be holding a joint raffle, featuring prizes from Birds of Lace, amongst others.If you’ve never seen a copy of Gigantic Sequins up close and personal, you are in for a treat. Please stop by our table– we’re right next to Wave Books!

We will be co-hosting an off-site reading with Big Lucks, Knee-Jerk, Magic Helicopter Press and Rose Metal Press on Saturday, 3/3. We are pleased to have Amanda Auchter and Matthew Siegel reading for us there. Visit the facebook invite for more information. We hope to see you there.

EXTENDED Submissions Period

Thanks everyone who has so far sent us your work in. You should see some replies trickling in soon. We are announcing, though, an extension to our submission period. We’d love for people we meet at AWP to be able to, albeit last minute, send us their work, so we are allowing our submissions period to last until March 10th. Send us your best work today!

New in 2012

Hello all! We have some things here at Gigantic Sequins that are new for 2012!

1) Dig our website’s new layout! We like it. We also know now what our site looks like on an iPad. We think it’s snazzy. See the photo below, or check us out on your own iPad!

2) We created some GS merchandise that features our logo as Kickstarter rewards, but we also printed some extra in case any of our fans wanted any! This is a test run– if people like and buy what we have of the merchandise, we’ll be sure to quickly order more for the year. Below, you can see our editor in chief modeling the GS totebag and also a Ladies-sized shirt, and we also have a guest modeling the Men’s medium-sized shirt. We have the new Gigantic Sequins Store set up via our Editor in chief’s blog. Check out our store!

3) We look forward to bringing you issue 3.2 later this spring/summer, and we hope that you are considering sending us your best creative non-fiction, culture essays, short stories, flash fiction, poetry, lyric essays, comics and black & white art before our submissions deadline, 2.1.12. 4) We have events planned already between now and April! First, we have a reading to celebrate the recent release of issue 3.1 at Trident Booksellers & Cafe in Boston on Thursday, February 23rd. The week after that is AWP in Chicago! We couldn’t be more excited to be there, sharing a table at the bookfair with our friends at Big Lucks. We have a reading on Saturday, March 3rd with them as well as with Rose Metal Press, Knee-Jerk, and Magic Helicopter Press. We hope to run into you in Chicago that week, and we especially hope to see you stop by our table or our reading. Finally, we’ll be attending the Brooklyn Zine Fest in April on Sunday the 15th. We hope also to be at the Houston Indie Book Fest on April 14th, celebrate 3.1 at a Houston bookstore, and secure a reading in NYC/Philly to do the same, soon.
